A school built around four stepping stones.
Sunshine Steps Learning Centre sits on Chakan Road in Talegaon, and carries children all the way from their first uncertain morning away from home to the day they walk into big school without looking back.
Our story
It started with a gap in the afternoon.
Talegaon has no shortage of preschools, but rather fewer places that keep going once the preschool morning ends — somewhere a child can learn, eat a real lunch, properly rest, and be looked after until a parent finishes work.
That gap is what Sunshine Steps was set up to close. We’re a preschool first — playgroup through Sr. KG, CBSE-aligned, taught through play and capped at twenty-five children a batch — but the day doesn’t stop at one o’clock, because dayboarding carries on until six in the same building, with the same people.
The name isn’t decoration either: the four children crossing four stones in our logo are crawling, toddling, walking and striding, and that progression is how the whole school is arranged, with each programme picking a child up exactly where the last one set them down.
Our vision
A child should be able to spend a whole day here and go home fed, rested and pleased with themselves, while a parent gets through that same day without once wondering how it is going.
In practice
What the labels actually look like.
Every preschool brochure in Pune says “play-based” and “CBSE-aligned”, so here is what each of those words looks like on an ordinary Tuesday at Sunshine Steps.
Play-based
A child works out what heavy and light mean by carrying things rather than by being told, which is why all the sorting, pouring, stacking and building going on around the room is the lesson itself and not the break between lessons.
CBSE-aligned
The order in which things get introduced follows the CBSE foundational stage, so that Class 1 arrives as the next step along rather than as a different country altogether.
Small batches
Twenty-five is a ceiling rather than a target, and it is the difference between a teacher who manages a room and a teacher who knows which child had a rough morning.
Whole-day care
Meals, rest and supervision count as part of the education here rather than a service bolted on afterwards, for the straightforward reason that a hungry, tired child learns very little.
The best way to judge a school is to stand in it.
Photographs and paragraphs only carry you so far, so come in on a weekday morning, watch a class run, and see whether the room feels like somewhere you’d happily leave your child for nine hours.
